Contemporary Biographies translated from the Greek by Elizabeth Dawes and Norman H. Baynes

“East Roman asceticism took many forms and we have sought to illustrate that diversity in the choice of biographies to be translated. St. John the Almsgiver was the Patriarch of Alexandria in a time of crisis during the early years of the seventh century; St. Theodore the Sykeote represents life amongst the peasantry of Anatolia at the end of the sixth century, while Daniel, the pillar saint, brought to the neighbourhood of Constantinople the peculiar form of the ascetic life which St. Simeon had devised for himself in Syria. Daniel, stationed on the European shore of the Bosphorus, is in close touch with the Patriarch, with successive emperors and with the people of the capital.”
