“The publication is divided into two sections. The first section contains the Orthodox services, according to the Old Rite, for Sunday Services as indicated in the full Octoechos, or Book of Eight Tones. The second section contains the ‘Heirmosi’ (liturgical hymns opening each Ode of the respective canon) for the Sunday Canons for Compline, Midnight Service, and Matins, also from the full Octoechos. [...]We believe and hope that this publication[...]will enable a continuation, expansion, and more meaningful use of the hymns because of the opportunity for the faithful to sing hymns using English, their primary language. Also, with the addition of western staff notation to the ancient ‘hook’ notation, it is our hope that a greater number of parishes and individuals interested in traditional liturgical singing will now be given access to this unique and beautiful style of liturgical chant, now approaching a millennium of documented use in Orthodox Christianity.”
