“The issue of the Shroud is[...]particularly important for the Orthodox Christian. While one must be very cautious about approaching the subject of supernatural light in Eastern Orthodox theology (since the one–to–one correspondence between spiritual and physical events which man, in his fallen state, seeks to understand is not in fact open to his ‘closed’ eyes), there is no doubt that the image of light is extremely important in the mystical expression of the Orthodox Church’s theology. To have in modern times, then, an image of Christ created by an Energy recognized, but not understood, by modern science is in some ways a testimony to the spiritual experiences which our Church has wisely shrouded in mystery and has passed on, in Saint Basil the Great’s magnificent expression, ‘ἀπὸ τῆς μυστικῆς καὶ σιωπωμένης παραδόσεως [from the mystical and silent tradition].’”
