“Tsar-Martyr Nicholas II has not been treated kindly by secular historians, either Soviet or Western. Viewing Orthodox monarchs as strictly political figures, who interact solely on the physical and intellectual planes with other political figures, such historians base their assessments on the apparent successes and failures of these rulers in the realm of governmental administration. But the history of the reign of an Orthodox monarch can only properly be evaluated within the context of the purpose of that reign: to foster and safeguard a national environment that enhances the lives of his Orthodox subjects in directing themselves to the true kingdom—the Kingdom of Heaven. Tsar Nicholas and his family, as can be seen from the Life and Service that follow, held our Lord Jesus Christ and His teachings first in all things, ahead of all worldly considerations. For this reason they were misunderstood by those around them, even by some of the members of their own extended family, and the crosses they bore because of this lack of comprehension were heavy indeed. Some of the more sensitive souls around them were able to see true glimpses of their life, and we are greatly indebted to those friends, relatives, and loyal subjects who described their observations in their memoirs.”
