“In 1881 the superior of Saint Michael the Archangel monastery of Cheremis in the diocese of Kazan, Hegumen Paisii Fedorov, published in Kazan four tales of a certain pious pilgrim. The tales described how the pilgrim obtained the gift of praying the Jesus prayer unceasingly and the edifying and instructive events that happened to him while he wandered at length across the limitless expanses of Siberia. The book was called ‘The Candid Tale of a Pilgrim to His Spiritual Father.’”
