“Our first edition of the Pentecostarion, which was the first of the Church’s principal service books that we have published, was printed in 1990. In 1997 we printed our Great Horologion and, in 2005, the twelve volumes of the Menaion. In preparing this sec­ond edition of the Pentecostarion, we have incorporated many hymns that were printed in a revised version in the Horologion, and we have made the physical format and the conventions used in rubrics and indications of typicon to conform to those estab­lished for the Menaion. For the first edition, we used as the basis of our translation the Greek edition of the Pentecostarion published at Venice in 1836 by Bartholomew of the Monastery of Koutloumousiou on the Holy Mountain of Athos. For this revised edition, we have also consult­ed Bartholomew’s third edition, printed in Venice in 1856, and an edition printed in Rome in 1884, besides a modern edition based on Bartholomew’s, the Ἀποστολικὴ Διακονία edition of 1959. For the great feasts, especially the Iambic Canon of Pentecost, we have consulted Saint Nicodemus’s Ἑορτοδρόμιον, his commen­tary on the Canons of the Great Feasts that was printed in Venice in 1836. In comparing different Greek editions, one occasionally en­counters variant readings. Some can be dismissed as obvious ty­pographical errors. When the choice between variant readings is not straightforward, we usually consult the Slavonic text also.”
