“There have appeared in recent years both in English and Russian a number of works concerning the Holy New Martyr Elizabeth. In these books one finds mention of the Martha-Mary Convent though without much detail. In this present work, written by St. Elizabeth herself,we obtain a vivid description of the Convent and its inner life. Moreover, through the words of the author we gain a view of her soul and its strivings. In this aspect perhaps lies the greatest value of this book. We have attempted as much as is possible to preserve the spirit and appearance of the Russian original in order to present the reader not only with a work of historical interest but something that may prove spiritually edifying as well.”
