“The Holy and Great martyr Barbara lived in the beginning of the third century in the ancient city of Heliopolis (city of the sun). Heliopolis was in those days a large and important trading center near Lebanon, close to the Persian border. Today this city is called Baalbeck, after Baal, an ancient pagan god. Barbara was the daughter and only child of a wealthy nobleman named Dioscorus, who also served as Governor of Heliopolis.”
