“Saint John was born on June 4, 1896, in the country house of his parents, Boris Ivanovich and Glafyra Michailovna Maximovitch, who were descended from aristocracy, in the village of Adamovka in the county of Kharkov (in present–day Ukraine), and at Holy Baptism he received the name of the Archangel Michael. His ancestors on his father’s side were of Serbian descent. One of his forebears, Saint John, the Metropolitan of Tobolsk, led a lofty ascetic life and was a missionary and the author of spiritual works. He lived in the first half of the eighteenth century, and his Glorification was the last to take place during the reign of the Holy Tsar–Martyr Nicholas II (1868–1918).”
