Number XLVIII of Monographic Supplement Series

“The present article[...]is dedicated to[...]the relationship of Saint Seraphim and the Moscow Patriarchate. In these relations, at the historical level two periods can be very clearly delineated. The first, the Saint’s tenure in the jurisdiction of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad (ROCA), extends to the end of the Second World War. The second period begins from the time of his transfer to the jurisdiction of the Moscow Patriarchate, ending with his repose in 1950. During the first period, Saint Seraphim was a member of the Synod of Bishops of the ROCA, and his relationship with the church authorities in Moscow transpired principally within the course of relations between these two Russian jurisdictions. It is crucially important to examine the emergence and historical development of inconsistencies in these relations, for outside this context it is impossible correctly to understand the motivations which guided Saint Seraphim on his difficult and often exceptionally complex path.”
