“This great Father, Confessor, and unshakable pillar of Orthodoxy was born in Constantinople around the year 1392 and was named Manuel at Baptism. His parents, George and Maria, were Orthodox Christians, eminent and illustrious in the world, as we may infer not only from their family name Evgenikos, ‘Noble,’ but also from the excellent education of Manuel and his brother John. His father was a Deacon and Treasurer of the Great Church, while his mother was the daughter of a physician.”
