“An increasing amount of attention has been given in recent years to the civilization of the Byzantine Empire, which flourished in the Greek East from the early part of the third century A.D. to 1453. Although many learned works have been written about that great Christian civilization, still certain important aspects of it have been but little explored. This is especially true of its philosophy and theology, and the deeper essence and significance of its art. Since 1949, I have done considerable research in the fields of Byzantine art, philosophy and theology, and from time to time have published the results of my research. In this volume I have gathered together some of my already published articles and have added three papers that have not appeared in print: ‘Philoshopy,’ ‘The Way to Knowledge,’ and ‘Hymnody.’”
