Translated from the Russian edition of St. Theophan the Recluse
No. 2 of Orthodox Theological Texts
“This English edition of the writings of the 11th-century Holy Father St. Symeon the New Theologian was translated from the 1892 Russian edition of St. Symeon’s homilies, which in turn was translated by St. Theophan the Recluse from the Greek edition of 1790. It is fitting that St. Symeon’s Russian translator, St. Theophan, was himself a Church Father of holy life. Like St. Symeon, St. Theophan had direct contact with God, which enabled him to express theological and spiritual truths from his own experience. St. Theophan translated St. Symeon’s writings into Russian out of a desire to confirm his contemporaries in the Orthodox Patristic teaching on the beginning and final aim of human existence. Nearly a century after St. Theophan, the American Orthodox writer Fr. Seraphim Rose translated these writings into English out of the same desire.”
