Volume Three of New Library
“After the passing away of my brother John, I began going over his archive in order to sift out those papers of his that to my mind are of enduring interest and value from those that are not. Among the former I found seventeen excellent discussion-reviews of books. When I had read them carefully, I decided to put them together and publish them as Volume III of my series New Library. The books reviewed deal with the Hellenic cultural and religious tradition that stretches from Antiquity to the Present. In gathering them together and preparing them for publication, I arranged them so far as possible in the chronological sequence of the authors and the periods with which the books discussed deal. Thus, the volume took in a way the form of a continuous story.”
