“This book begins with the first English-language account of the life of St. Herman of Alaska (1757–1836). The author of this Life, Frank Alfred Golder (1877–1929), was a Russian-born professor of history as Washington State College at Pullman. When the Life was originally published in the first part of the twentieth century, Fr. Herman was little known outside of Alaska and his Valaam Monastery in northern Russia. Many years later, in 1970, Fr. Herman was canonized by the Orthodox Church, and today he is revered worldwide, especially in the countries of America, Russia, Greece, Romania and Serbia.”
