In our time, seldom is the word ‘beauty’ used to denote a certain inner, spiritual disposition or state, referred to in earlier times as ‘spiritual beauty.’ In past ages, especially the Byzantine period, the word ‘beauty’ was often employed in the second sense. However, in every epoch, from Antiquity to the present, the word has appeared in various writings to characterize something inward, spiritual, as well as something external, physical.”
