“The word ‘beauty’ is usually employed to denote some harmony that is observed in the external, material world; for example, in the starry heavens, in flowers, in the face and body of someone, in a temple of the classical period, such as the Parthenon, or in a Byzantine Church, particularly the great Church of Hagia Sophia at Constantinople. In our time, seldom is the word ‘beauty’ used to denote a certain inner, spiritual disposition or state, referred to in earlier times as ‘spiritual beauty.’ In past ages, especially the Byzantine period, the word ‘beauty’ was often employed in the second sense. However, in every epoch, from Antiquity to the present, the word has appeared in various writings to characterize something inward, spiritual, as well as something external, physical.”
