By Constantine Cavarnos

“St. Mark of Ephesos is above all remembered and honored in the Orthodox Church for his rejection of the False Council of Ferrara-Florence (1438-39), considered by the Roman Catholic Church to be the ‘17th Oecumenical Council,’ which proposed to reunite the Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches just a few decades prior to the fall of the Byzantine Empire, with the capture of Constantinople by the Turks on May 29, 1453. It is undoubtedly in recognition of this fact that Professor Cavarnos decided to publish this work on St. Mark, since many of the same challenges that the Saint dealt with in confronting unionist and anti-unionist parties, in his day, are posed in our own day by ecumenical and anti-ecumenical sentiments that divide Orthodox churchmen, theologians, and the faithful alike.”
