Metropolitan Cyprian
Translated from the Greek by Sister Justina

“One very familiar ruse and trap which the Devil uses to destroy the sanctity of the Mystery of Confession, and to thwart the liberation of the soul from sin, is shame. The enemy of the soul visits embarrassment upon the penitent, such that he hides from his spiritual Father those sins which deeply humiliate him and lower his esteem before others. Thus, however, the penitent adds a most burdensome, deadly sin to his former sins, i.e. the sin of sacrilege, as the Saints of our Church characterize it.”
