Translated from the Greek

A volume of The Great Synaxaristes of the Orthodox Church

“Cosmas (Kosmas) and Damian, the holy martyrs and brothers by birth, flourished during the years of the sons of Emperor Carus: Carinus (b. ca. 250-284 and Numerian (b. 253-283). Numerian died in 283, a mere Caesar, while Carinus, the elder brother, governed the western provinces as joint Augustus with his father. In early 284, after fighting Germans on the Rhine and the Quadi on the Danube front, the triumphant Carinus celebrated these victories. Now the brothers Cosmas and Damian were born in the great city of Rome, wherein their parents nurtured them in the fear of God. They were bred up to be well-trained physicians. They practised their art at Rome. By their labors, they first purged themselves of the destructive passions so they might cleanse others. These brilliant brothers led an active life of good deeds in showing love to their neighbors. They kept the commandments of Christ.”
—“On the 1st of July, the holy Church commemorates the holy and wonderworking Unmercenaries COSMAS and DAMIAN of Rome.”
