Translated from the Greek

A volume of The Great Synaxaristes of the Orthodox Church

“Jeremias, the wondrous prophet of the Lord, was sanctified from his mother’s womb, as God says of him: ‘And the word of the Lord came to him (Prophet Jeremias), saying, “Before I formed thee in the belly, I knew thee; and before thou camest forth from the womb, I sanctified thee; I appointed thee a prophet to the nations [Jer. 1:4, 5].”’ The prophet’s book opens, saying, ‘The word of God which came to Jeremias the son of Chelcias, of the priests, who dwelt in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin [Jer. 1:1].’. The prophet received a popular name in biblical times, meaning ‘may the Lord lift up’ or ‘the Lord exalts’ (Heb. yerim-yahu).”
—“On the 1st of May, the holy Church commemorates the holy Prophet JEREMIAS (Jeremiah).”
