Translated from the Greek

A volume of The Great Synaxaristes of the Orthodox Church

“Evdokia, the holy and righteous martyr of Christ, lived in Samaria of Palestine, though she was born in Heliopolis of Phoenicia, during the reign of the Roman Emperor Trajan (98-117). Evdokia’s Misspent Youth In her youth, the blessed woman was so beautiful that no artist could adequately portray her exquisite features. By reason of her loveliness, she received many compliments which proved to be a stumbling block, hindering her from receiving the teaching of Christian ethics. Thus, remaining in her ancestral impiety, she tumbled into the sin of fornication and plucked the pleasures of youth, since it is rare to discover wisdom, purity, and beauty abiding in one person. Therefore, to the malignant joy of the devil, she became a courtesan who delighted in her every sinful desire.”
—“On the 1st of March, the holy Church commemorates the holy and venerable Martyr EVDOKIA of Heliopolis.”
