Archbishop Chrysostomos

Number XLIV of Monographic Supplement Series

“Inevitably, someone will question the pertinence of an essay on a seventeenth-century Spanish Jesuit who, as we shall see, wrote on matters usually categorized under the disparaging term ‘Jesuit casuistry’ to the series of monographic supplements published by Orthodox Tradition, the triannual publication of the Center for Traditionalist Orthodox Studies. After all, this series, like the Center itself, is dedicated to Orthodox Church history and theology and related subjects. Moreover, writings by Orthodox traditionalists about the Jesuits, given the anti-Papist stand of the former and the legendary dedication of the Society of Jesus to the Papacy, are more often than not polemical in tone and centered on unfortunate historical grievances and events. Hence, I concede that what I hope is an objective presentation of the thought of a brilliant Jesuit teacher may seem imprudent to some and may cause others unfairly to impugn the aim of my study.”
